he Trump administration has for the first time made public a list 20 companies officials say are owned or controlled by the Chinese military, which includes blacklisted firms Huawei and Hikvision, in a move that paves the way for further sanctions on some of China’s biggest tech companies.

The Department of Defense list, published by Axios, features 20 firms that Trump officials claim are backed by the Chinese military, operating in the U.S. and ranges from telecoms firms, aerospace and aviation, to shipbuilding and construction.

It also includes CRRC, the world’s largest passenger train manufacturer, which has contracts in major U.S. cities including Chicago and Los Angeles, Reuters reports.

Businesses on the list face potential sanctions, under the 1999 National Defense Authorization Act which the list was drawn up under.

Hikvision, China’s video surveillance giant, is battling to be removed from the list, Reuters reports, while the firm denied being a military company, adding that the allegations were “baseless.”

Publication of the list follows months of pressure from top Republicans asking Defense Secretary Mark Esper to “update and release” the list, amid heightened trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

China’s tech industry is in the frontline of the trade war between the United States and China. Companies like Huawei, Hikvision, and CRRC have exploded on the global stage and are now challenging and beating international competitors in their home markets despite long-running concerns about their ties with the Chinese government, and potential security concerns.

On Thursday, Huawei lost out on building Singapore’s 5G infrastructure to Nokia and Ericsson, but Singapore’s ministry for communications and information denied excluding Huawei from its networks. Minister S. Iswaran told CNBC: “As we look ahead, our 5G ecosystem will continue to evolve and there will be more opportunities for various technology players to participate.”

Update – TAKASHI MURAKAMI TAKES THE MASK GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Takashi Murakami is once again pushing the boundaries of conventional design, this time with his eccentric take on the traditional face mask.

After releasing masks with his signature flower print in May, the Japanese designer has now presented a new design, which flips the script on the conventional face masks we have all come to know as a part of our “new normal.” Murakami takes protective gear to protective new heights.

A post on Murakami’s Instagram yesterday shows the non-conventional face mask modeled by Takeshi “Cherry” Ishida of Cherry Fukuoka. The pleated olive-green mask covers the entire face, save for a narrow slit for the eyes to peer through.

Although it is unclear if the mask is part of a larger art piece or collection, the photo’s backdrop reveals that Murakami is in the research and development stages of his project.
