The gradual reopening of Quebec continues on Monday, May 11. Most notably, preschools, elementary schools, and daycares outside of the Montreal area (CMM) are set to welcome students back for the first time since they closed in March. Mining and manufacturing enterprises will also resume with some restrictions.

While the government had originally projected that retail in Montreal would open on May 11, Premier Legault twice postponed that date, first to May 18 and then to May 25.

Still, the Premier has made clear that the new date will only hold if the situation improves in the metropolis and its suburbs.

“So, if tomorrow morning there were an increase in the spread of the virus in greater Montreal, we would not have all the staff […] to deal with this increase.”

Elementary schools and daycares are opening outside of the 82 municipalities of the Montreal metropolitan community (CMM), though attendance is not mandatory.

Teachers, students, and parents will have to follow strict rules to safeguard everyone’s health.

Update – Canada, Quebec

A day to appreciate mothers around the world and everything they do for their children. On Sunday, May 10, Quebec Premier François Legaultshared a kind-hearted message for his mother, his wife, and all the other mamas that help make our province the place that it is.

“Every year, Mother’s Day is an opportunity to think about and visit your mother.

Legault then told us that since his mother is 91 years old, she is currently part of the vulnerable group in society right now.

The Premier has actively been saying that we must “help the most vulnerable,” and it is for this reason that the majority of us cannot see our mothers today.

The Premier ended his Mother’s Day message full of positivity and hope, which you can read below.

Besides his mother, he also took the time to wish his wife Isabelle a happy Mother’s Day.

“The other woman in my life is of course my wife @isabelle_brais, who is also the mother of my two guys.”

He also wished all other Quebec mothers a happy Mother’s Day.

He wished her happy birthday on April 1, Legault wrote: “I have a very tender thought for the one who gives me the strength and courage to serve you, rain or shine.”

Looking at government figures who are offering kind messages this Mother’s Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also shared one.

Update – Breaking Business

In another sign of the stress faced by retailers. Gap, Inc. is facing potential legal action after the retailer failed to pay rent on one of its Manhattan stores for the months of April and May.

The landlord of the Gap store at 1212 Avenue of the Americas says the apparel giant failed to pay rent for April and May, along with water charges and snow removal, leaving the company with an unpaid bill of $530,334.

Gap is one of numerous retailers to have faced financial downturns as the ongoing coronavirus crisis forces many stores to shutter.

The company, which also owns brands such as Banana Republic and Old Navy, expected its cash holdings to drop from $1.7 billion USD to as low as $750 million USD by the conclusion of the financial quarter ending on May 2, 2020.

Moreover, Earlier this week, luxury department store Neiman Marcusfiled for bankruptcy while Nordstrom announced it would close 16 of its stores.

In addition to back rent, Gap’s landlord, 48th Americas LLC, is asking for attorneys fees of at least $20,000.

The suit was filed Monday in federal court in Manhattan.
